Ukraine and the Holy See discuss paths toward a just peace and humanitarian cooperation
10 January 2026 20:08

A telephone conversation took place between the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Andrii Sybiha, and the Secretary for Relations with States and International Organizations of the Holy See, Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher.

During the conversation, sincere gratitude was conveyed to His Holiness Pope Leo XIV for his prayers for Ukraine and for his moral solidarity with the Ukrainian people amid the full-scale aggression.

The Minister reaffirmed Ukraine’s commitment to achieving a just peace and emphasized the importance of active diplomacy in close coordination with international partners.

Particular attention was given to the completion of the process of transferring St. Nicholas Church in Kyiv to the religious community of the Roman Catholic Church, which demonstrates Ukraine’s consistent policy of protecting the rights of religious communities and freedom of religion.

The crucial role of the Holy See in facilitating the release of prisoners and the return of deported Ukrainian children within the #BringKidsBackUA initiative was also underscored.
