On February 25, the fourth anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, a Mass for peace in Ukraine and in memory of those who lost their lives as a result of the Russian aggression was celebrated at the Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere in Rome. The liturgy, initiated by the Embassy of Ukraine, was presided over by Cardinal Matteo Zuppi.
The service became a sign of spiritual solidarity with the Ukrainian people in a time of profound trial. Members of the Ukrainian community in Italy, clergy and representatives of the diplomatic corps attended.
Prayers were offered for the swift restoration of a just peace, for the victims of the war and for all those who continue to suffer from the consequences of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. In his homily, Cardinal Zuppi recounted real stories of Ukrainians marked by the war — those who have lost loved ones, those left without a home and families torn apart by the conflict.
The broad participation of faithful, diplomats and religious leaders once again underscored the enduring support for Ukraine and its people.
The Embassy expressed its gratitude to Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, in his capacity as the Pope’s special envoy for humanitarian affairs, for his consistent efforts aimed at securing the return of all Ukrainian prisoners of war, illegally deported children and detained civilians.
