New monument to Prince Volodymyr the Great of Kyiv, creator and baptizer of medieval European state Rus-Ukraine was opened on the 11th October in Rome on the territory of the monumental complex Saint Sophia. The monument, which had been previously kept in the Vatican museums, is a work of famous Ukrainian sculptor Leonid Molodozhanyn.
The event was organized in the framework of the 1000 anniversary of Volodymyr the Great, who is honoured by both Orthodox and Catholics. It is worth noting that this is not the first landmark of Ukrainian statehood in Rome. Since 1989 there is an altar with mosaic of Prince Volodymyr with trident at St. Peter’s Cathedral in Vatican.
